Ways to Save Money on Food while Traveling

If you're anything like me, you enjoy flavorful, savory, indulgent eats ALL the time! Even more, you love dining experiences that check the above criteria that won't break the bank. Now, don't get me wrong...I love a fine dining experience with three-courses, a multitude of utensils (I never use), and real table cloths. However, I also enjoy #QueeningOnABudget! Who's with me?!

Top Ways to Save Money on Food while Traveling & Dining Locally

Groupon Deals

Don't sleep on Groupon's food (and drink) deals! Businesses offer a variety of ways to save through their deals. For example, I have benefitted from 2-for-1 deals, purchasing a deal for "X" amount that is then doubled, and three-course meals at a discount.

If I have a restaurant in mind, I typically type in the name of that establishment on the Groupon site to see if I can find any savings. Sometimes I have no clue what I want to eat, so I type in the city and search for deals that way.

Yelp Check-In

Another easy way to save money on food is to check out Yelp. I don't allow these deals to dictate where I choose to eat like Groupon deals. I generally pop the name of the restaurant in the search bar on Yelp once I'm seated or pondering over the menu. I have received free appetizers and money off simply for checking Yelp.

It can be hard to locate and easy to overlook while researching/reading reviews. So I'll show where to find the deals on a mobile phone and computer.

On a computer, look under the column located on the right side of the page. Scroll down to the point where the "business information" is located. See image below.

On a mobile phone, it's also location under "Business Info". The only difference is on phone this section is clearly labeled. See image below.

Pro Tip: If you're not sure where you want to eat, type in "Check-In Offers Food" in the search bar and then select your location. This will pull up the restaurants that have offers available in your area.

Credit Card / Debit Card Offers

Credit card and debit card offers are one of my favorite ways to save money on food. Fortunately, my bank and credit card companies email me a list of offers monthly, which serves as a reminder for me to check for savings. Either way it's super easy to check - Just login to your account and look on the home page or search "offers".

It's super clutch! Who doesn't want to receive cash back for purchases you would have made anyways. See examples of some of the offers from my bank and credit card companies below.

Pro Tip: If you're a spender/shopper, check your offers PERIODT! As you can see from the example above, the offers aren't only for food.

Coupon Books

I love coupons. It may sound old school, but saving money isn't! Can I get an amen?!

Be sure to check the tourist/visitor "brochure wall or table" at your hotel, Airbnb, hostel, etc. There are always coupons to save money on food (and excursions). Not all hotels have a "brochure wall or table". So be sure to check your room or just ask the folks in charge.

Happy Hour & "Reverse" Happy Hour

This one may seem obvious, but I'm not making any assumptions when it comes to saving money. Now, I know we've all experienced a happy hour or 1o (Lol!). However, it's come to my attention that some of y'all have never heard of "reverse happy hour".

To drive traffic during less frequented hours (i.e. after dinner), restaurants offer a late happy hour to make up for the drop in customers after the dinner rush. Bonus: Some of those same restaurants offer all day happy hour on slower days. For example, Kona Grill is one of my go to spots because they offer all of the above.

Talk to me! Tell me how you save money while traveling or dining locally.
