The Yucatan Playa del Carmen, Tapestry Collection by Hilton — An Honest Review

I'll be honest with you the way I'd want someone to be honest with me before I booked a trip. The Yucatan Playa del Carmen, Tapestry Collection by Hilton isn't perfect. But for five nights on Hilton points in one of the best locations on Quinta Avenida, it absolutely delivered where it counted.

01 Points Value & Pricing
We booked this entire stay on Hilton Honors points, and if you're a points traveler, this property is a genuinely solid redemption. As Diamond members, we also received our fifth night free — a standard Diamond benefit, which effectively stretched our points 20% further.
Even setting points aside, this hotel is reasonably priced for what it is and where it sits. A property in this exact location, steps from Quinta Avenida, the beach, and some of the best restaurants in Playa del Carmen commands a premium in the vacation rental market. The Yucatan punches above its weight on value. If you're a Hilton points collector looking for a high-impact redemption in Mexico, put this on your list.
💳 HEADS UP ON TAXES Even though we paid entirely with points, we were charged approximately $30 at check-in for Mexican tourism taxes. This is standard practice in Mexico and not a Hilton surcharge. Just budget for it so it doesn't catch you off guard at the front desk. |
02 Check-In: Know Your Booking
This is the part of the stay that required the most energy, and I want to be transparent about it so you can advocate for yourself if needed.
I booked a room with a balcony. At check-in, we were assigned a room without one — a step below what I had booked and paid for in points. When I raised this at the front desk, I was told the correct room wouldn't be available until the following day.
I pulled up the hotel's own website on my phone and found that the room type I had booked was showing as available for that very night. When I brought that information back to the front desk, the agent rechecked the system and discovered a discrepancy between their internal inventory and what was showing online. It turned out there was a room available and it was actually an upgrade to a junior suite with a balcony.
⚠️ ADVOCATE FOR YOURSELF I shouldn't have had to make this case, especially during low season when the hotel was nowhere near full capacity. If the hotel is going to adjust your room, a downgrade should never be the default move, particularly for loyalty members. The upgrade did come through, but the back and forth was unnecessary. Know what you booked, check the website if you get pushback, and don't be afraid to speak up calmly and clearly. |
Once we were settled into the junior suite, the situation resolved itself and we genuinely loved the room. The balcony facing Quinta Avenida was one of the highlights of the entire trip.

03 Location, Noise & the Balcony
Here's the thing about being right on Quinta Avenida: it is an absolute gift for convenience, and it comes with a soundtrack. Music, crowds, and nightlife energy carry right up to your room well past midnight. If you're a light sleeper or need silence to unwind, a balcony facing the strip is not for you.
🌙 WE LOVED IT Most nights we kept the balcony door open, poured a drink, and let the music from the street become the atmosphere. It felt like being in the middle of it all without having to leave the room. It was one of our favorite parts of the stay, just not a fit for everyone. |
For walkability, this location is unmatched. Restaurants, bars, coffee shops, late-night food, and the beach are all within a few minutes on foot. We never once needed a taxi to get somewhere we wanted to go in the evenings. Right next door is a 7-Eleven open 24 hours, a surprising but very practical bonus for late-night snackers (no judgment, I'm one of you).
04 Breakfast: Skip It
As Diamond members, complimentary breakfast was included in our stay. I want to be straightforward: skip it. The hotel breakfast was underwhelming, particularly given where you are.
🍳 BETTER OPTIONS OUTSIDE Within a five-minute walk of the hotel, there are phenomenal breakfast spots with fresh Mexican flavors, made-to-order food, and local atmosphere that will absolutely outperform anything on the hotel's breakfast menu. Don't waste the morning at the hotel buffet, get out and explore. You will not regret it. |
05 Rooftop Pool, Bar & the Drinks Situation
The rooftop is a genuinely nice space with views over the avenue. A few practical things to know:
The pool closes at 8pm. The water is cold. These aren't complaints, just facts worth knowing before you plan your day around a late afternoon swim.
The rooftop bar serves food and, at the time of our visit, offered unlimited drinks for $50 per person for the day. There are also happy hour specials. We did the unlimited drinks package one day, and on another we brought up our own bottle, mixers, and beers from a nearby shop. The difference in cost was significant. We saved considerably by going the DIY route. Both approaches work; just know the option exists.
🍹 MONEY-SAVING TIP Pick up a bottle, some beer, and mixers from one of the nearby shops before heading to the rooftop. Bring them up with you and enjoy the same view for a fraction of the price. We did both approaches over the trip and had a great time either way. |
06 Gym, Running & Other Amenities
The rooftop gym is open 24 hours and covers the basics well — enough equipment to get a solid workout in without anything missing. For runners, Quinta Avenida is a popular route; we saw people running it regularly during our stay, and the pedestrian-heavy stretch makes for a scenic morning run.
Rooms were clean throughout the stay. The hotel feels well-maintained and the staff, once past the check-in friction, were pleasant and accommodating.

A Note on the All-Inclusive History
We encountered a few guests during our stay who had visited the property when it operated as an all-inclusive — apparently with more of a party-resort atmosphere. They were disappointed to return and find that had changed. Worth mentioning if you've seen older reviews that describe a different vibe: the current property is quieter, more independent traveler-oriented, and no longer all-inclusive. For us, that was completely fine. But if you're chasing that former atmosphere, it no longer exists here.
Hotel vs. Airbnb in Playa del Carmen
We've done both. On a previous trip, we stayed in an Airbnb while traveling with a group, which made sense for the kitchen access, extra space, and split cost. Personally, I preferred the hotel experience — the consistency, the rooftop, and the points value made it worthwhile for a couple. But if you're traveling with a group or prioritizing budget, an Airbnb in the same neighborhood is a legitimate alternative that will serve you well.
How We'd Rate It

The Yucatan Playa del Carmen, Tapestry Collection by Hilton: Is It Worth It?
Would we stay at The Yucatan Playa del Carmen, Tapestry Collection by Hilton again? Yes. The location is the kind that makes a trip and paired with a solid points redemption and the Diamond fifth night free, the value is hard to argue with. Just know what you booked, skip the hotel breakfast, and embrace the sounds of Quinta Avenida from your balcony. That part, at least, is magic.
